El verbo ‘tener’

Usado informalmente ‘tener’ para expresar posesión, como en ‘tengo dos hermanas’.

Ahora observe las siguientes formas (tenga en cuenta que 'tener' es irregular en el presente)

‘Tener ... años’ (Tener ... años)

Mientras que el inglés suele utilizar ‘to be’... para decir la edad (I am twenty years old), el español usa ‘tener ... años’. 

Para preguntar sobre la edad, la pregunta ‘¿Cuántos años ...?’ Se usa con ‘tener’.

- ¿Cuántos años tiene ella?

- (ella) Tiene veinte años

The verb ‘tener’

You have already informally used ‘tener’ (to have) to express possession, as in ‘tengo dos hermanas’.

Now observe the following forms (note that ‘tener’ is irregular in the present).

‘Tener… años’ (To be… years old)

Whereas English uses to be… to tell age (She is fifteen years old), Spanish uses ‘tener… años’. To inquire about age, the question ‘¿Cuántos años…?’ (How many years…?) is used with ‘tener’.

• ¿Cuántos años tiene ella?
• How old is she?

• (ella) Tiene veinte años 
• She is twenty years old.
